Our women’s empowerment projects is based in Juan Pablo II comedor in Huanchaco (a comedor is a cross between a soup kitchen and a community centre). Our Otra Cosa Network volunteers help the mums in the kitchen to serve breakfast and lunch to the 100 children who attend el comedor on a daily basis. In addition to helping with the daily routine of the comedor, the volunteers also organise weekly sewing classes for the mums, to build profitable skills to empower them, English classes twice a week for their children and also, during summer, surf classes for the kids. When possible, the mothers also joined us at the beach for an afternoon of fun and relaxation.
Thanks to funds raised by Otra Cosa Network and the volunteers working at our project, we also had the possibility to go on some trips and celebrate special occasions. For Mother’s Day each of the mums received a special mug filled with treats and in February we spent the day at Conache Lake. Thanks to a donation we were able to give out toothbrushes to all of the adults and kids at the comedor, along with information about oral hygiene and another donation enabled us to provide the students of our sewing class with several months’ worth of material.
All of this has enabled us to support the women at the comedor!
