Helping out at Sustainable Tourism Agency & Fair Trade Café

Please note that this project is only open to volunteers between May and December, due to the wet season in Chachapoyas.

Chachapoyas, a growing tourist destination in Northern Peru, has started its first and only sustainable tourism agency. This is a project with a clear, alternative philosophy of promoting environmentally responsible tourism. It aims to minimize any environmental damage caused while tourists are exploring Peru by offering 'carbon offset' programs for tourists.

The agency also promotes socially responsible tourism, providing alternative experiences from the standard 'gringo trail' tours. The sustainable tourism agency offers the type of tours that allow tourists to experience, and get inspired by, the true spirit of Chachapoyas and the surrounding area. It is designed for tourists interested in having a more grass-roots type of contact with local communities. The sustainable tourism agency aims to encourage international tourists to be fully aware of their environmental impact and influence on local people, supporting the community and giving something back to it whenever possible.

The sustainable tourism agency has vacancies for the following tasks:

  • Creating and updating fact sheets and information for tourists to facilitate sustainable tourism in and around Chachapoyas

  • Assistance with translating tourist information into any languages that you are familiar with

  • Developing popular sustainable tourism products and liaising with local organisations, business owners and suppliers.

  • Recruiting and training local guides to work with the agency.

  • Developing any new ideas of your own, compatible with the agency's sustainable tourism philosophy.

  • Looking for local and international partners to cooperate with.

The Fair Trade Cafe has vacancies for the following tasks:

  • Taking orders, preparing food and drinks, clearing tables and cleaning up, taking payments off customers etc.
