I applied to be the HELP Environment project Coordinator because I have always had an interest in environmental sustainability and I thought it would be a great experience to write about on my resume.
The project is great because local kids learn that the environment is something worth protecting through fun and practical events and activities. For example, Yo Cuido Mi Playa (I Love My Beach), is a monthly event that invites local kids to take part in educational games and a beach clean. My favourite memory has to be watching the children being enamored with the ‘sea level rise’ experiment at our most recent Yo Cuido Mi Playa event.
I found the grassroots element of the project most enjoyable. It has been incredible to be a part of the project in its infancy and to watch it build up in the local community.
The most challenging part of the project is finding partners within the communities to take over the project once it’s set up.
Overall, it has been a pleasure to be the Coordinator for HELP Environment and I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of developing the project so that more kids and volunteers can learn about the importance of the environment in the future!
