School Days

My experience teaching English in a school in Huanchaco,Peru…

  • School days teaching English with Otra Cosa Network at Socorro fly by as I spend time getting to know my class, focusing on assignments, classroom management and getting across (in Spanish) enough instruction for students to learn and practice English. Recently, I have come up with some fun games and techniques that both the kids and I can enjoy!
  • This weeks lessons included a review of numbers and colors, which they have almost got down completely, and exciting new lessons on days of the week, months and body parts. My favorite so far, is teaching parts of the body, and finishing up with the rhyme….”head, shoulder, knees and toes, knees and toes. Head, shoulders …….eyes and ears, mouth and nose …” well, you know the drill!! The kids had a blast trying to keep up with me, and were attentive throughout the experience. Finding different ways to teach which work is so important!
  • the dreaded chalk board

  • Recess continues to be special, hanging with the chicas/ninas and chicos/ninos (girls and boys) and often practicing what we went over in class. Sometimes we spend recess with them asking what we may go over in next class. That’s me, my recess gang reading from the book I bought with me. It has been a life saver.

Was ¨spotted¨by a few of my students on the street or while eating and introduced to their parents as ¨my professora de ingles @ Socorro (their school)¨. Talk about PRICELESS!

    eager learners

Don´t ever say never to getting out there, giving it a try and soaking up the good feeling of trying to make a small difference to peoples’ lives, by sharing what you know and receiving so much more in return. Age in this case, does not matter! Just do it!
