Volunteer Coordinator

This role is extremely important to our organization. Our volunteers come from all over the world from a variety of different back grounds. For many it is their first time in South America and for some it is the first time they have ever been away from home. Adjusting to the cultural differences and getting settled into their projects can be a challenge. To help with this adjustment it is important to create a solid volunteer community. Maintaining close relations with our volunteers is the key to being successful in this position, as you will play a central part in the experience of most of the other volunteers. In this role you will work closely with our staff and get an inside look to the workings of a small charity. It is a great position to gain experience for those who are interested in entering the charity world.
Volunteer Roles/ Working Hours

  • Meeting and greeting new volunteers, including running the welcome induction and walking tour
  • Organising volunteer activities, such as theme nights, outings and the weekly volunteer lunch
  • Taking new volunteers to their projects and helping to settle them in there
  • Writing the weekly volunteer newsletter
  • Conducting intro interviews with volunteers after they have settled in to check in with them and help them set goals that they would like to achieve while they are here.
  • Help with accompanying/supporting volunteers if they need to go the doctors/hospital/police, etc.
  • Helping out in the OCN office, including responding to email enquiries, some general admin tasks and helping with recruitment.
  • Normal working hours: largely 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday; early/evening/weekend meet & greets.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Spanish Level to Start Project: Higher Intermediate
  • Time Commitment: Min 6 months
  • Minimum Age: 21 years old
  • Fluent English (written and spoken)
  • Knowledge/previous studies related to development/Latin America/social work/psychology/human resources would be a real bonus
  • Excellent communication/ conflict resolution/ interpersonal skills
  • Experience in working with people from different cultural backgrounds
  • Mature and positive attitude with a good sense of humour
  • Hard working and enthusiastic

Fundraising Coordinator

Otra Cosa Network needs to explore new fundraising opportunities in the UK and in the European Union, building up a varied network of funding support to establish the organisation and ensure long-term commitment to our local projects. OCN seeks to raise funds from various sources especially those with an interest in Latin America.
Volunteer Roles/ Working Hours

  • Prepare fundraising documents and other support materials, e.g. flyers, texts for website
  • Approach potential and existing donors to persuade them to donate for the first time or increase their donations
  • Maintain, increase and communicate with a database of donors; an understanding of the Data
  • Protection Act and the various privacy regulations is essential for this task
  • Understand and exploit the tax benefits offered by the UK government to charities, e.g. Gift Aid
  • Occasionally travel locally, making grant applications to donors’ offices in Warwick (for UK based volunteer) and in Peru (for Peru based volunteers) to explain policy and motivate staff and volunteers
  • Working hour can be flexibly arranged (minimum 20 hours per week of volunteering)

  • Native (or fully fluent) English speaker
  • Time Commitment: Min 3 months
  • Minimum Age: 21 years
  • Confidence, enthusiasm and commitment to the cause
  • Excellent communication ability – both written and verbal

  • Knowledge of finance and money management ability is a bonus
  • Creativity and the ability to be proactive are desirable qualities for this role

Marketing Coordinator

Helping to ensure that Otra Cosa Network is able to maximise volunteer recruitment, as well as helping with the management of both our online and local presence. This is a really key role, as without this work, we would struggle both to find volunteers for our projects and to communicate effectively with our supporters and the local community.
Volunteer Roles/ Working Hour

  • Assisting with development and implementation of direct marketing solicitations and membership mailings
  • Managing online marketing, including social media (recruitment websites, facebook, twitter, Instagram, youtube)
    • Managing the blog, collecting one entry per week from fellow volunteers or writing the entries yourself
    • Managing SEO
  • Managing offline marketing, such as updating flyers, posters, etc
  • Assisting with production of newsletters and other publications
  • Assisting preparing & implementing any OCN events
  • Contacting universities for potential partnerships
  • This position requires 25 hours a week. Working hours can be flexibly arranged within our office hours (Monday-Friday 9:00am-6:00pm)
  • You may also:
    • Help with general admin tasks
    • Help with updating/maintaining the website
    • Help with raising the profile of OCN, both locally and abroad
    • Help to produce flyers/posters for events
    • Develop new initiatives

Specialist Office Volunteer

Volunteer Roles/Working Hours

We need volunteers with a solid knowledge of any of the following specialist areas:

  • Website design and maintenance (using WordPress)
  • Graphic design: in order to ensure that our newsletters, annual reports, social media, website and other documents look their best, we would
  • Salesforce database: we are just starting to work with Salesforce to track our data and would love help to get our system up and running efficiently
  • MS Excel: keeping our information in order is very important – whether it’s financial spreadsheets or monitoring and evaluation information – as this helps us to stay effective and allows us to ensure that we have the information we need.
  • Translation (from English to Spanish): we strive to be a fully bilingual organisation (a work which is still in progress) and part of this includes ensuring that our publications are available in both languages.
  • Photography/video: in order to ensure that our newsletters, annual reports, social media and website look their best, we need to ensure that we have high quality, up-to-date images that accurately reflect our work.

We are always open to suggestions to improve our practices – we are willing to learn! Through these roles you would be indirectly helping all the projects we support. Many of these roles can be part-time, so volunteers can combine this work with some part-time work on one of our ‘front line’ social projects.
Whilst there can be some flexibility in hours, our office hours are 9am-1pm and 2pm-5pm from Monday – Friday. Volunteers are requested to commit 20 hours per week (although this could be split between more than one project), and working hours can be coordinated upon arrival (flexible).
Office volunteers must bring their own laptop for the work. We don’t have any extra computers! There is wifi internet connection in the office.
We also welcome any suggestions to improve our processes or administration to better serve the projects we work with and support the volunteers who come here. This could come from your practical day to day work here, or from any background you have in administration, IT, HR or business or voluntary/charity sector experience.

  • Spanish Level to Start Project: No Spanish needed, except for translation role, where native Spanish speakers are preferred (although those with an advanced level of Spanish will also be considered)
  • Native English speaker or advanced level of English
  • Time Commitment: Min. 1 month
  • Minimum Age: 21 years
  • Website volunteers should be experienced in WordPress
  • Graphic Design volunteers should be familiar with InDesign and/or Illustrator
  • Some experience in administration in business or the volunteer or charity sector, an advantage, but not essential
  • Have the energy and enthusiasm to work with potential volunteers from around the world and the volunteers already here in Peru.
