This comfortable, modern, white house and lovely garden (with passion fruit trees) is divided into several areas. On the ground floor is the kitchen and lounge/dining room for common use by volunteers and a separate area with the two downstairs bedrooms and shared bathroom. On the first floor are the two upstairs bedrooms, shared bathroom and office space, as well as the accommodation of one of the Assistant Managers and of the Operations Manager. On the second floor is the OCN Office, the accommodation of the other Assistant Manager and an open roof space for use by volunteers to wash and hang laundry in the summer months.

We need sensible, mature volunteers with respect for our organisation, the Volunteer House rules and other volunteers and neighbours. This is not a party house, but volunteers can make this comfortable setting their home in Peru. For this reason we have set a minimum age requirement of 21.

The volunteer house is a very affordable option for accommodation in Huanchaco, especially in the summer months (December – March) when local hostels raise their prices.

Home Stays

Gabi and Jorge

Huanchaco: live with a middle-class family from the highlands

This house is owned by a very friendly middle class couple from the northern highlands of Peru who have lived in Huanchaco for more than 10 years. The couple, Jorge and Gabi share their home with their son Diego (30), Diego’s girlfriend Miss, the family cat Pia and their dog Apu. In the evenings, Diego and Miss run a small sushi restaurant from the family home, but there’s still plenty of room for your privacy!

This particular home stay is a great opportunity to get to know a real Peruvian family whilst also having the little luxuries you may be used to at home (hot water, internet etc.). It is ideal for volunteers wanting to practice and improve their Spanish as the whole family are extremely welcoming and keen to converse with and get to know the volunteers they host. However, if your Spanish is not so good, Jorge and Diego also speak English.

They do not have many rules regarding volunteers so long as there is mutual respect and good communication. They want volunteers to feel as if they were in their own home. However, overnight guests are not allowed in the house.

The house itself is in a quiet location, within walking distance to all projects in Huanchaco. The house is also situated one block back from the beach front where public transport passes. It is also conveniently located just a couple of blocks away from the restaurants and bars in Los Pinos, one of the main streets in Huanchaco. In the lounge area, there is a stereo, TV and DVD player that volunteers are welcome to use. There is also access to a washing machine for a small fee, a computer with internet connection, wi-fi, telephone, a hot shower and kitchen facilities.

Huanchaco: live with a local artist

Please note that Luis is only able to accept male volunteers.

This house is owned by a local artist, Luis. After spending a lot of time in the jungle, he is back living in the house with his dogs and cats.

Luis is very friendly, philosophical and interactive, and he loves having discussions with volunteers. He offers lessons in sculpting, culture, and various other arts. He is interested in alternative therapies and will also be happy to take you out surfing. He can also organise tours to Tarapoto, in the Peruvian Amazon Basin, which is a great place to start tours to the Amazon Rainforest.

The atmosphere in this house is very chilled, earthy and communal. Luis doesn’t speak much English and so it would be a great place to practice your Spanish. The house and its facilities are very simple, but it has a creative and alternative ambiance due to Luis’s artwork around the house. There is a big, open kitchen area, around which the rooms are based. Luis does not provide soap, toilet paper, cleaning products etc. and so volunteers will have to go out and buy their own supplies.

The house is conveniently located for the centre of town and the restaurants and bars in Los Pinos, one of the main streets of Huanchaco. It is also just a five-minute walk away from the beach and public transport that can take you to Trujillo centre (30 minutes).
