PROJECTS

HELP ENVIRONMENT

HELP Environment has two primary focuses. The first and most developed being environmental education. We work closely with the younger generation of locals in Huanchaco  with the hope of influencing their attitudes towards the environment, boost their knowledge of large-scale environmental issues and demonstrate how day-to-day behaviours can have a more positive influence on their own environment and community. The second focus is on direct environmental impacts with outreach campaigns.

HELP ENGLISH

In Peru the English language is part of the government designed school curriculum. It is technically a requirement for schools to have English lessons. However, the schools in our area, like many others, are neglected and are not provided the resources or teachers to have English in their schools. At private schools children are made familiar with English at a young age however these schools are not within the means of the communities we work with.
This is why, our HELP English program focuses on making english lessons available to the community of Cerrito de la Virgen in Huanchaco, in order to provide them with this valuable tool for their formation.

HELP LITERACY

Our literacy project has 2 main focuses:
The first project project began in 2013 when Otra Cosa Network received a grant from LitWorld, a US-based non-profit, to set up a reading club for girls, known as a LitClub, in the shanty town of Cerrito de la Virgen. LitWorld recognises that literacy provides access to history, knowledge, creativity and democracy and so aims to create social transformation at a grassroots level by funding LitClubs to improving literacy in disadvantaged communities in both the US and around the world.
The other focus of our Literacy project imapcts the community of Cerrito de la Virgen directly, by teaching the younger kids how to read and write in Spanish, and for the older ones who are already capable of reading, they are provided with a variety of books and a quiet space for them to practice and improve their reading skills.

HELP YOUTH

HELP Youth has evolved over the past several years from a skate ramp in a small shanty town, to a robust youth development program encompassing swimming, football, arts & crafts,  skate, healthy lifestyles and other activities.  Held every week at our REC in Cerrito de la Virgen, the kids from the community have a safe space available for them to do different activities under constant adult supervision from our volunteers.

HELP WOMEN

Our Women Project  is focusing on empowering the women of Huanchaco through education, The objective is to provide a safe space for women to be able to learn and develop skills. Currently the women’s project is being restructured. At Otra Cosa Network we believe that it is very important to adapt our projects to the needs of the community we are working with. Therefore we are updating our HELP Women project so that it is more appropriate for the current needs of women in Huancahco. Whilst we are restructuring the project we are not accepting volunteer applications for HELP Women, but you can find out more out the rest of our HELP projects
