As little as £10 covers the running cost of one of our educational workshops/classes for 40 kids- which allow us to provide educational workshops to children living in Cerrito de la Virgen.

PROMOTING EDUCATION IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Otra Cosa Network is a well-established UK Registered Charity and Peruvian registered not for profit (NGO), addressing the educational needs of children and vulnerable adults in an extremely impoverished area of Northern Peru.

Our mission is to promote education and social development in our local communities.  Our Vision is equal opportunities in Peru for everyone to succeed and thrive.

We work in informal settlements where many community members have been displaced by climate change, disaster and political instability. They live in precarious circumstances, few have running water or sewage provision and there is only sporadic electricity. Additionally, many children are forced to work instead of continuing their education and there are no community-based facilities for learning and developing new skills in a safe environment.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Otra Cosa Network  began in early 2000's as a small, low-cost volunteering agency providing volunteers to a few, mainly local, projects. It was started by Juany and Peter Murphy, a British-Peruvian couple, who lived in Huanchaco at the time.

What past volunteers think

“I cherish my experience working at OCN. The individuals I worked with were incredible and deserve a lot of credit for the hard work and dedication they demonstrated. It is clear that Huanchaco and its surrounding areas are beautiful, bright, and vibrant communities that are in need, and I think the work OCN does, along with other volunteer organizations in the areas, are vital to maintaining and enhancing that vibrance.”

"Being part of OCN is one of my most enriching experiences. I can share my knowledge, learn from others and meet wonderful people, in addition to helping my beautiful community. The happiness of the children after each activity is unique, and I am very grateful to all my colleagues for their friendship and support."

"Volunteering with OCN has been an incredible experience that I will remember forever. It has been amazing to connect with the local communities and also practice my Spanish. Some of my favourite memories have been playing with the kids at the REC, going for sunset surfs and also learning to dance salsa!"

"I have loved my time at OCN, working with the kids and seeing a difference being made is so rewarding. What made this even better was the close relationships formed with the volunteers and managers. They are so welcoming and helped me settle in and feel comfortable."
