The town of Huanchaco has about 5,000 inhabitants, and at its outskirts there are several informal settlements largely populated by migrants from the highlands and other South American countries like Venezuela. This creates a contrast between the wealthier beach town of Huanchaco and the socioeconomically disadvantaged settlements.
As a volunteer, you live in the town of Huanchaco, but the grand majority of our projects are situated in one of these informal settlements called Cerrito de la Virgen
While living here, our volunteers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the traditions and culture of Huanchaco like surfing; discovering the local cuisine with dishes such as ceviche, papa rellena, and picarones; or enjoy wathcing a nice long sunset on the coast of the Pacific ocean.
